The House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans (FOPO) submitted a report in February 2017, containing a series of recommendations that provide a sound basis for restoring lost protections to the Fisheries Act. The Committee's recommendations are generally supported by several environmental and conservation organizations, including West Coast Environmental Law Association.
However, the individual submissions from several Canadian environmental organizations also include recommendations not covered by the Standing Committee’s report. This briefing note highlights those priority recommendations. It includes four outcomes and five specific areas of reform for a new Fisheries Act that would enable supporting policies and programs to sustain healthy fisheries, waters and economies for generations to come.
