In February 2018, the federal government tabled Bill C-69, which contained new legislation to replace the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012. The new Impact Assessment Act included in Bill C-69 follows more than 18 months of consultation on federal environmental assessment (EA) processes, and purports to fulfill the government’s commitment to introduce new, fair processes to strengthen environmental decision-making and regain public trust.
This brief was submitted to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development as part of their review of Bill C-69. The submission outlines West Coast Environmental Law Association’s recommendations for amendments needed to ensure that the new Impact Assessment Act achieves objectives and safeguards Canadians and the environment.
