West Coast Environmental Law reacts to Minister Oliver’s Manning Conference Address

Plans to roll back federal environmental reviews are reckless say environmental lawyers

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (March 9, 2012) - Jessica Clogg, Executive Director and Senior Counsel at West Coast Environmental Law issued the following statement in response to the Minister of Natural Resources’ remarks to the Manning Networking Conference today.

“The federal government is recklessly planning to turn the clock back with plans to slash federal environmental laws.”

“Canadians want strong environmental laws to protect our communities, ecosystems, health, and economy. Instead we have a federal government intent on pushing through megaprojects, like the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipelines and tankers project, at all costs.”

“Gutting federal environmental reviews will jeopardize public health and safety, and invite the kind of environmental devastation we saw from resource megaprojects in days gone-by before federal environmental assessment was required.”
