Vancouver, BC - Calvin Sandborn has been awarded the Dr. Andrew Thompson Award by West Coast Environmental Law for his contribution to environmental protection and sustainability in British Columbia.
The award was presented to Mr. Sandborn at the Environmental Law Practitioners: Renewing Environmental Law Conference on the evening of February 3rd, 2011. Mr. Sandborn has practiced environmental law for over 20 years and is one of the pre-eminent environmental lawyers in British Columbia. From providing legal advocacy, to empowering citizens, to mentoring the next generation of environmental lawyers, he has been an outstanding advocate for the environment.
Mr. Sandborn is the Legal Director of the Environmental Law Centre with the University of Victoria and formerly served as legal counsel with West Coast Environmental Law, the Farmworkers Legal Services Project and the Forest Practices Board of British Columbia. He has litigated many high profile cases, successfully lobbied for numerous environmental reforms and is the author of several books and numerous publications.
“Calvin’s enthusiasm – both for protecting the environment and for the students he works with – is both a joy to watch and infectious. With each stage of his career, including his years at West Coast Environmental Law, he has worked hard to strengthen BC’s environmental laws,” said Andrew Gage, the Acting Executive Director of West Coast Environmental Law. “Now at the UVic Environmental Law Centre he’s passing on his wide range of knowledge and skills to future generations of public interest environmental lawyers.”
The Dr. Andrew Thompson Award recognizes excellence in environmental advocacy and protection. It was established in 2004, by West Coast Environmental Law, as a legacy to Dr. Andrew Thompson, who was a pioneer in the fields of environmental law. In keeping with Dr. Andrew Thompson’s legacy, the award takes particular note of contributions that have been made through enabling of citizens, building capacity within communities and fostering of environmental protection and sustainability through constructive dialogue.
