West Coast Environmental Law is seeking Indigenous youth to join our Board of Directors.

West Coast is a non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding the environment through law. We are committed to transforming the legal landscape in ways that are more sustainable, more democratic and more just, with a particular focus on collaborative legal strategies that bridge Indigenous and Canadian law. West Coast’s is known for its RELAW – Revitalizing Indigenous Law for Land, Air and Water – initiative, a unique co-learning and legal support program focused on Indigenous law. RELAW reflects learning from our legal work with and for Indigenous nations since 1974.

If you are an Indigenous person between the ages of 19-29 and are interested in this opportunity, please email us a brief statement explaining why to admin@wcel.org, attn: Nominations Committee by June 15, 2024. Please include the names and contact info for two references who can speak to how you meet the criteria below.

Application deadline: Until positions are filled.

Consideration will be given to the following in selecting board candidates:

  • demonstrated commitment and leadership on environmental and climate justice issues
  • interest in Indigenous legal traditions
  • interest in environmental law and policy reform
  • interest in mentorship opportunities in board governance in the non-profit sector
  • able to commit 5-6 hours a month for two years 
  • 2SLGBTQQIA+ people are encouraged to apply.

The West Coast Indigenous youth board positions are intended to support intergenerational learning and the growth of the next generation of leaders. Honoraria, and mentorship from senior Indigenous leadership on our board will be provided, and there may be an opportunity for youth board members to attend, participate and represent West Coast’s board at RELAW co-learning sessions.

We have openings for two youth director positions for September 2024. Youth directors selected will be invited to serve for an initial two-year term which may be renewed.
