A Green Budget for a Prosperous Canada

Were you excited to read our take on the supposed visionary green budget proposed by the federal government earlier today?

Or did you catch on right away that anything received on April 1st should likely be taken with a grain of salt? We hope you’re not offended by our little prank! We aimed to make an important point about the federal government’s dismantling of our environmental safety net over the last few years.

It really shouldn’t be a joke to imagine that the Canadian government would pass a bill that actually protects the things Canadians value deeply, like our water, air, wild spaces and democracy – and the ability of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren to enjoy those things too.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen a very poor environmental track record from the current Canadian government: The 2012 omnibus “budget” bills C-38 and C-45 repealed or replaced most of Canada’s oldest and most important environmental laws. The changes were requested by industry, and were nothing short of unprecedented attacks on nature and democracy.

It would certainly be a major about-face if the Canadian government passed a bill restoring our environmental safety net. But there is no reason why it shouldn’t.

You can help: there is a rumour that the actual budget will be tabled on April 2nd. Today, join us in urging the federal government to restore strong environmental legal protection for Canadians, democracy and the environment.
