Lower Fraser leaders call for regional action on key priorities for flood management

Lower Fraser Floodplains Forum brings together decision-makers and experts to chart a path forward for flood resilience

Stó:lō Territories / CHILLIWACK, BC – At a day-long regional gathering on June 9th, leaders from First Nations, local and provincial governments, federal and provincial agencies, farm associations and stakeholders came together to lay the groundwork for an action plan for flood management and long-term resilience in the Lower Fraser region. A total of 58 different organizations were represented.

In the wake of the November 2021 flooding, communities (both local governments and First Nations) have been under pressure to develop recovery plans with varying levels of capacity and resources and with little to no opportunity for collaboration.

BC Polling Results Show Strong Support for Suing Big Oil

BC Syndicated Polling included in Stratcom's quarterly omnibus survey finds that 69% of British Columbians support their local government working with other local governments to sue the world’s most polluting oil companies for a share of the costs of climate change. Less than 20% opposed taking this action.

This survey was conducted with 807 BC adults residents from July 7th to July 12th, 2022. A random sample of panelists were invited to complete the online survey from a selection of panels and river sources through Lucid. 

Physicians, lawyers call on BC to investigate thousands of Heat Dome injuries

xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) & səl̓ilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Territories/VANCOUVER – The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) and West Coast Environmental Law Association today warned that BC’s recent Heat Dome may have caused an estimated five to six thousand heat-related injuries.

TAKE ACTION: Tell the government to do better to protect our communities from heat waves and climate change

We feel, in the wake of this year’s heat wave and the loss of the Village of Lytton to wildfire, that the BC government needs to do much more – much more urgently – to protect our communities from climate change.

Scientific study on climate-fueled BC heat wave highlights urgent need for action and accountability
