Memegwans Johnson-Owl

Summer Law Student

Memegwans Johnson-Owl (she/her/hers) is part of the Summer 2022 law student intern cohort at West Coast Environmental Law. Her name means “little butterfly” in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) but she typically goes by Mem. Mem is from Sagamok Anishinawbek & Montreal Lake Cree Nation and grew up in Regina, SK. Like many others, she left the prairies and moved to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia (UBC). After switching majors a few times, Mem chose First Nations & Indigenous Studies with a minor in Political Science. Mem was particularly interested in the intersection of the two areas looking at comparisons of government style, using political ideologies to situate Indigenous methods of justice, resistance, and reconciliation. In her spare time, Mem dedicated her time to mentoring Indigenous youth at the Writer’s Exchange, with Alberta’s Future Leaders (AFL), and in her role as an Aboriginal Ambassador for UBC’s recruitment team. Youth mentorship and Indigenous representation continue to be a driving passion for her.

After graduating at the start of the pandemic, Mem took a break from school and accepted a position with Indigenous Youth Internship Program (IYIP).  During this internship, Mem was placed with the Ministry of the Attorney General in the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) which is a civilian oversight agency for police-inflicted incidents of violence & with Native Courtworkers and Counselling (NCCABC). Recently, Mem came back to the IIO for an advisory & investigation oversight position for a case involving an Indigenous person. Her year break from school was also the time she decided to write the LSAT and apply to law school. Now, Mem has just completed her first year at Peter A. Allard School of Law!

Outside of the academic world, Mem works part-time as a model with Supernaturals Modelling Agency, the first Indigenous agency in Canada and would consider herself a “TikToker”.  She enjoys reading romantic comedies, doing jigsaw puzzles, getting outside, and hanging out with her cat, Princess Nokia.
