EDRF grants focus on Vancouver Island Mines, Kootenay Power Project and Williams Lake Logging

West Coast Environmental Law is proud to support the following groups with grants through our Environmental Dispute Resolution Fund:

• Coalwatch Comox Valley has received a second grant to assist it in participating in the environmental assessment of the Raven Underground Coal Project – a mine proposed for Vancouver Island. Carly Chunick is advising Coalwatch.
• In other mining related EDRF grant-news, Carly Chunick has also been retained by the Greenways Land Trust to help press for a full environmental assessment of the proposed expansion of the Quinsam Coal Mine, near (or technically in, due to creative municipal boundaries) Campbell River. The need for this environmental assessment has taken on new urgency on the heels of a recent study by Dr. William Cullen suggesting that the mine is responsible for elevated levels of arsenic in nearby lakes.
• Michael and Gabriella Grabowsky of Glacier Creek, in the Kootenays, have received a grant to hire lawyers Kenyon McGee and Joanna Cowen to examine their options to oppose the controversial Glacier/Howser Independent Power Project.
• Maiyoo Keyoh Society received a grant to examine the possibility of a legal challenge of logging permits in the Society’s traditional territory. The Maiyoo Keyoh Society is also represented by lawyers Christopher Devlin and Tim Thielmann.
