About the Environmental Law Alert

It’s easy to assume that good environmental laws will always be there to protect our environment. However, when industry is pressing the government to weaken air pollution laws, or a provincial law is failing to protect fish or drinking water, West Coast Environmental Law is there to sound the alarm.

Through our work we are constantly pressing for stronger environmental laws on specific issues and environmental problems. However, the Environmental Law Alert unit tracks issues with British Columbia’s environmental laws more generally, including commenting on:

  • proposed changes to the law that will weaken, or strengthen, environmental protection;
  • stories and situations where existing environmental laws are failing to protect the environment; and
  • emerging legal strategies that could be used to protect our environment.

Our public voice is the Environmental Law Alert blog. But in addition to these public postings, we often give detailed submissions to government or other decision-makers on whether proposed changes to laws will strengthen or weaken environmental protection in British Columbia.

If you have an environmental story that we should hear about, please e-mail Andrew Gage at agage@wcel.org. Also, please feel free to comment on any of the posts to the Environmental Law Alert blog – but please keep in mind our policies on comments.
