Aboriginal Law

Over the next decade, the constitutional imperative of Aboriginal Title and Rights recognition will result in fundamental shifts to the laws and policies governing land, resources and community development in BC.

West Coast Environmental Law has been at the forefront in providing legal and strategic advice to First Nations and First Nations political organisations to inform these shifts, including crafting law reform solutions that honourably address Aboriginal Title and Rights and foster ecological and cultural sustainability.

Areas of work:

  • Indigenous Environmental Law project - First Nations’ own environmental laws, tried and tested through millennia of resource management of their territories, are a critical source of wisdom and action to address today’s resource development and environmental challenges.
  • Strategic Planning - Developing land use plans can be a powerful way for a First Nation to communicate their laws and the wisdom of their Elders in order to protect the lands and resources of their territory and eventually transform mainstream laws as well.
