Josh Paterson - Staff Counsel

Josh holds law and master’s degrees from the University of Toronto. He is the Aboriginal and Natural Resources lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law, where he works with First Nations and other communities on issues related to energy, oil and gas, and forests. He has been particularly involved in West Coast’s advocacy and legal analysis related to the threat of northern pipelines and oil tankers on the coast.

After clerking at Ontario’s Superior Court, he worked at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association in Toronto as Acting Director of the Freedom of Expression, Equality and Dignity Projects. While at CCLA, he was involved in their participation in the Ipperwash Inquiry and engaged in extensive background research on First Nations rights.

In the three years prior to joining West Coast, Josh practiced union-side labour and human rights law in Vancouver, and has played a key role at the Vancouver Public Space Network where he volunteers as a director and coordinator. Josh was named 2007 Lawyer of the Year by Pro Bono Law British Columbia.
