Halalt First Nation

The District of North Cowichan has proposed to drill two wells and extract water from an aquifer on Halalt traditional territory. Draining water from the Aquifer is expected to reduce water levels of the Chemainus River.  The Halalt First Nation received an EDRF grant to bring a court challenge in the Supreme Court of British Columbia to the provincial government decision to grant Environmental Assessments certificates that allows the construction of water wells tapping into the Chemainus Aquifer. Their goal is to ensure that a proper Watershed plan is developed to address the impacts of any drilled wells on the Chemainus River.
