Gavin Smith - Staff Counsel
Before joining West Coast Environmental Law, Gavin practiced Aboriginal law at a private firm where he represented First Nations in relation to issues such as land use and management, environmental assessments, provincial regulatory decision-making, implementation of modern treaties and Aboriginal self-governance. Gavin has also worked on environmental law and policy issues from the varied perspectives of the NGO sector, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and academia.
Gavin is a part of West Coast’s Aboriginal and natural resources law team. He is passionate about pushing for reform of the systems of environmental governance in British Columbia and Canada in order to manage our shared environmental heritage in a way that truly evaluates and responds to the cumulative effects of human development and accounts for the crucial role of Indigenous governance in that process.
